Our first video: Interview with Health and Wellness Expert and author Tara Baklund. Her new book is entitled Youniversal Selfcare. Admist all the discussion of Health Care Reform in the political arena, are you making a good enough effort to take control of your own health?

Thom Hartmann, leading progressive talk radio host and author, discusses his latest book Threshold at the Suburban World Theater in Minneapolis on August 17, 2009.

The Minneapolis Farmer's Market is just one of thousands in the US. The growing movement is attributed to the availablity of inexpensive, fresh, and often organic local produce, with a higher percentage of the proceeds going directly to the growers.

RFK, JR and Catskill Mountainkeeper
I was fortunate to hear Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., at the Catskill Mountainkeeper annual BBQ. His speech was inpiring, highlighting the victories of the environmental movement over the years, and the need to keep the Catskills free from gas drilling. Wes Gillingham, at right, works with Castkill Mountainkeeper.

AUDIO: Interview with Dr. Miles Groth of Wagner College, and Men's Studies Press, about the need for Men's Studies courses and Michael Jackson. I also celebrate Al Franken's swearing in to the U.S. Senate. Click on the arrow to listen to the complete show (24:06)

Want to hear something scary? Due to water and air pollution in the Arctic Region, there are towns in Greenland where there are no boys being born. Also, in the US, boys are underperforming in school, and female college students now outnumber males by 50%. The Potomac River is so filled with pollutants called endocrine disruptors that 80% of male smallmouth bass are laying eggs. And these same chemicals are believed to be a cause of a surge in birth deformities in boys in the region.

Does this mean it's time for Men's Studies courses? We'll discuss that with Professor Miles Groth of Wagner College, an editor at MenStudies.com, a scholarly publishing company of Men Studies journals and books. Publications include Debating Masculinity, International Journal of Men's Health, and Thymos: Journal of Boyhood Studies.

From the MenStudies.com web site:

The Men's Studies Press
Founded in 1992, the Men's Studies Press (MSP) is a small independent publisher dedicated to the dissemination and promotion of men's studies scholars' work.

Dr. Miles Groth, whose mantra is "The boy is father to the man," from the Brithish poet Williams Wordsworth.

Boys are currnetly falling behind in school, and are going to college at much lower rates than girls. In fact, a number of colleges are now practicing affirmative action in favor of male applicants due to the low number of perspective male students.

Congratulations Senator Franken!

Al Franken has finally been sworn in as the second U.S. Senator from the state of Minnesota, and becomes the first comedian (in his words, "a satirist") to serve in the Senate. Former Air America Radio host and Saturday Night Live writer and actor, Al Franken is a passionate, articulate, and thoughtful man, and a personal friend of the late Senator Paul Wellstone, whose untimely death was a tragedy and a loss to not only Minnesotans, but to the whole country.

To get a feel for the real Al Franken, check out this video of his acceptance speech courtesy of The Uptake, shot by Noah Kunin.

Are you ready for some really great tunes? Then listen to this episode of Liberal Arts with Mark Sutton as I am joined by the fabulous singer/songwriter from New York, Leslie Mendelson.

Leslie's first CD on the Rykodisc label comes out on June 30, and is filled with some absolutely beautiful songs. Leslie has been featured as "An Artist to Watch" by I Heart Radio, and when you listen to this interview, you will know why.

The CD can be purchased in stores or on Amazon.com, and for those who prefer downloads, find Leslie Mendelson in the iTunes music store and purchase it there. To learn more about Leslie Mendelson and to keep up on tour dates, visit her myspace page: myspace.com/lesliemendelson, or become her friend on Facebook!

Leslie performs at the Rockwood Music Hall in New York with James Maddock (left) and Steve McEwan (right).
Maddock also performed in the band Wood and plays lead guitar on Swan Feathers, and Steve McEwan,
who cowrote a number of the songs on the album, has also written hits for Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw,
and Keith Urban, among others.
