ABOUT

"I believe that art as well as politics go right to the heart of the human soul, to our most deeply held feelings and beliefs. Therefore, it only makes sense to me to look at the arts through a political lens. I am most interested in passion – that part of us that feels compelled to create, share, and inform. That’s what I look for in guests, and that’s why I created Liberal Arts." -- Mark Sutton

Liberal Arts With Mark Sutton

Radio host and producer Mark Sutton (NPR, Air America, XM Satellite Radio) is joined by guests from the world of music, art, political cartoons, film and more. Liberal Arts guests have included Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders, Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas, satirist turned politician Al Franken, food expert Kip Stroden of Essential Living Foods, Phil and Mitch Margo of the Tokens (“The Lion Sleeps Tonight”), as well as many others in the arts and in politics.

Mark’s coverage of the RNC, DNC, Election Night at Grant Park in Chicago, and the Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama culminated in an invitation to MC the Official Party for Change Staff Victory Celebration for Obama volunteers and office workers from around the country. The event, which featured Obama advisor and Transition Team member Mark Alexander, was featured in a documentary by Jennifer Shaw entitled My Fellow Organizers.

As a producer, Mark worked as Executive Producer of The Money Message on Air America and XM, and produced Like Mother, Like Son for WJFF in Jeffersonville, NY, the nation’s only hydro-powered radio station. He also co-wrote and produced for Mother Jones Radio on Air America. As a freelance producer, he has produced for NPR’s Studio 360. Mark has been a guest on other radio shows, including The Rabbi Schmuley Show, both as a gender expert and as a musician. On television, Mark has appeared on MSNBC, and has guest hosted Men’s Net on several occasions.

In addition to his radio and TV work, Mark is an accomplished composer and trumpet player, having completed works for symphony orchestra, television commercials, jazz bands, TV, and film. He scored the Telly Award winning PSA “New York Feeds Me” for City Harvest Food Shelf, featuring Harrison Ford. Commercial clients include Tommy Hilfiger, Quaker Oats, Kiehl’s, and Aramis.
